About Yvette Cooper
Yvette Cooper (born 20 March 1969 in Inverness, Scotland) is a British Labour Party politician who has served as Member of Parliament since 1997, currently representing Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley. She held her constituency following boundary changes at the 2024 general election. Cooper was appointed Home Secretary in July 2024 under Prime Minister Keir Starmer and served in that role until September 2025, when she was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs (Foreign Secretary). She is known for her longstanding ministerial career, including roles such as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Work and Pensions Secretary in previous Labour governments, as well as being the first minister to take maternity leave (2001), and the first woman to be appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury (2008). As Foreign Secretary since 5 September 2025, she plays a key role in UK foreign policy and global affairs.
